KAIRO STREET
photographic installation, space with two entrances, 8 transparencies in lightboxes, each 100×100cm
2011

The photographic installation Kairo Street represents eight consecutive houses on a street named Kairo in the district of Toukola in Helsinki, Finland. The work is a visual study on the identity of suburban housing in a Nordic welfare state – an ideal towards which post-Soviet Estonia often seems to aspire. The lightbox installation and the frontal depiction of the houses that’s in contrast with the random positioning of the trees creates the presence of this particular street. The work is installed in a darkened space with two entrances on opposite sides of the room to emphasize the viewer's movement through the depicted scenery.
