FIGURE-GROUND STUDY
photographic installation, space divided by a partition wall with arc-shaped openings, two transparencies in lightboxes, both 113×113 cm
2016

In Figure-Ground Study, the immersive experience of looking at photographs in a darkened space as lightboxes is disrupted by two aspects. When entering the space, the viewer encounters a partition wall with two arc-shaped openings that block parts of the image depending on the chosen vantage point. In the photographs themselves, the 'ground'-part of the diptych makes a relatively successful attempt at coherently depicting space, while the 'figure'-part of the photographs seems to resist this spatial coherence. A reflected image of the Palazzo della Civiltá Italiana, perhaps the most iconic structure of Fascist architecture is depicted in the background.
