Paul Kuimet’s artists’ book In Vicinity consists of a photographic series by the same title and an essay by Mari Laanemets, discussing Kuimet’s work and its subject, the suburb. The photographs depict new suburban development areas near Tallinn. In the spirit of the fast economic growth in Estonia in the early 2000s, vast areas of former agricultural farming lands were turned into new housing developments. Kuimet aims to document the results of this drastic change in his photographic series – which is shot entirely within a five-kilometer radius of where the artist grew up. Upon close inspection this altered landscape also reveals the broader hopes and desires of a society – ones that have remained unreachable for many of its inhabitants.
In Vicinity was published on the occasion of and was exhibited at Paul Kuimet’s solo exhibition Viewfinders at Art Hall Gallery in Tallinn, 21.12.2011–08.01.2012. The book is hand-numbered by the artist.
